WHAT IS SEMANTIC WEB?

Semantic Web is a technology introduced by Timothy John Berners-Lee and is defined as a technology that enables computers to process autonomously without human hands by giving semantic to information resources. In semantic Web, one can perform complex searches and utilize specific type of information by giving data that defines what it means when describing it.

The following figure depicts technology layers that enable Semantic Web. RDF(Resource Description Framework) is a central concept and a framework known as the most promising expression form among those standardized in W3C when describing information. In RDF, information is described by three types of resources, namely, subject, predicate and object, known as triple. The layers in the figure show RDF as a central concept, lower technology layers enabling machine-readable and upper technology layers processing intellectually.

RDF/OWL/SPARQL

RDF (Resource Description Framework), which is a unified framework where “resources” on the Web are machine-readable, is beginning to be used in some life science databases. Uniprot(Universal Protein Resource)is such a pioneering example, aiming at making RDF data of protein amino acid sequences available to the public. OWL (Web Ontology Language) as ontology is also used to describe in detail concepts (classes) which show the relationship between each knowledge about the functions of resources.

Queries across databases are made possible through SPARQL (SPARQL Protocol and RDF Query Language) by making existing public databases RDF-enable and constructing data linked with RDF data in each database. In SPARQL, one can search data through RDF data having flexible structures represented by graph structures, i.e. graph matching search by giving a partial graph as a query condition in the world of semantic Web represented by a large number of graphs.

About "SADI"

SADI(Semantic Automated Discovery and Integration) is a framework which leads dispersed data and analysis tools into mutual cooperation and knowledge discovery, based on the W3C semantic standards.

While databases provide not only search functionality also a framework which allows users to utilize data in a database and analysis results at the same time, we make analysis tools RDF-enable by semantic Web technology and make SADI services available to the public.
